The
first Bedford Branch Standard was dedicated at the famous
old RAF Station at Cardington on 1 January 1939 and
presented to the Bedford "Comrades" by Pilot
Officer E H Peet, a former World War One pilot and a
prominent figure
in the early years of the branch.
Originally laid up in Holy Trinity Church, Bedford, it was transferred to St
Paul's (The Parish Church of Bedford) in September 1974, where it remains.
A
ceremonial golden tassel for the Branch's present Standard, together with
an illuminated Golden Jubilee Certificate in recognition of out--standing
service and achievements in fund-raising over many years (notably by means
of the
annual
Battle of Britain Wings Appeal) was presented to the Branch by RAFA in 1996.
The present Standard is proudly paraded at all Civic and Public Services of Worship,
Ceremonies and other formal occasions in which the Branch participates

The
Diamond Jubilee of the Bedford Branch was celebrated in
November 1997, and is marked by a Commemorative seat erected
near the War Memorial on Bedford Embankment, which was
formally blessed and dedicated to the Citizens of Bedford
on 24 February 1998.
A plaque on the seat also records
its dedication to the memory of those who have given their
lives for our freedom whilst serving with the Royal and
Allied Air Forces.
Last year, the Bedford Branch actively participated in
RAFA's Nation-wide "Millennium Link" Project, which involved
the transport, by unusual and original means, of fragments
of local area maps. These fragments were eventually assembled,
like a jigsaw, into a giant map of the entire country, showing
all RAFA Branches, RAF Stations, ATC Units etc. The exercise
involved Bedford Branch receiving the Local Map from Leighton
Buzzard Branch, delivered by Veteran Buses, and ensuring
its safe delivery to the next link in the "Millennium
Chain", the St Neots Branch. Teams of local ATC cyclists,
a light aeroplane, "The Hawks" RAF Parachute display
team, and a "Microlight" aircraft were employed
to convey the local area map from Bedford to St Neots, by
road and by air, via Cranfield University Airfield and RAF
Henlow.
Although essentially a "Fun" exercise,
this event nevertheless attracted wide interest by the local
media and the active support of the Bedford Borough and
Bedforshire County Councils.
